Stroke Support Station (S3) held its inaugural charity dinner at the Marina Bay Sands, lauding the contributions of its supporters, volunteers and friends. More than $1 million was raised to support stroke survivors and their caregivers in their post-stroke community care in Singapore, leading to increased awareness of stroke in conjunction with World Stroke Day (29 October).

The event was well attended with prestigious guests that includes Principal Guest-of-Honour Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister & Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies with Key Guests-of- Honour, Mr Ng Chee Meng, Acting Minister for Education (Schools) & Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) & Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence. Other Guests of Honour are Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister of State, Ministry of Health, Mr Charles Chong, Deputy Speaker & Member of Parliament for Punggol East and Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC.

With Stroke as the number one cause for long term disability in Singapore, S3 Wellness Centre’s R.E.A.L (Re-learn & Enjoy Active Living) framework is designed to provide socio-emotional support that fosters community bonding amongst survivors, caregivers, volunteers and professionals in an inclusive environment in Enabling Village.  Since S3 opened its doors to members in January 2016, these post-stroke support programmes have helped many stroke survivors live an active life and re-integrate into society.

Mrs Teo Poh Yim, Founder and Chairman of Stroke Support Station said, “One wellness centre is not sufficient to provide support for the increasing numbers of stroke survivors who come from all over Singapore. We are partnering community hospitals and grass-root organisations to bring the S3 model of post-stroke support care to reach out to the thousands of stroke survivors.”

“In East Coast, we have many senior residents. A number of them suffered from stroke and mobility issues. In many cases, family members are not prepared and equipped to help stroke patient family members. By partnering S3, I hope we can build up comprehensive care-giving capabilities amongst our residents. In this way we can be better prepared for an aging population,” said Mr Lee Yi Shyan, MP for East Coast GRC.

“I am very glad that Stroke Support Station (S3) will help bring the volunteer-led  S3’s stroke support and management programme to Marsiling.   Our volunteers will be trained at S3 before we roll out the post-stroke support programme next year to benefit our residents with stroke, so that they can develop greater resilience and independence, while keeping themselves motivated,” said Mdm Halimah Yacob, MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.

The Stroke Support Station Charity Gala Dinner is part of S3’s fundraising campaign to raise funds to extend its programmes and services targeted at stroke survivors and their caregivers.  Funds raised will be used to roll out S3’s expansion and outreach plans, as well as to subsidise stroke survivors and their caregivers’ participation in new programmes (R.E.A.L), thereby helping them to rebuild their confidence and independence.

The S3 Charity Gala Dinner is organised by MW Medical Investment Holding Pte Ltd with partners Face, Body & Skin Aesthetics Medical Centre, WMI Holdings Pte Ltd and Flame Communications Pte Ltd.

Face, Body & Skin Aesthetics Medical Centre (FBS), the aesthetics arm of MW Medical Investment Holding Co Pte Ltd, a leading integrated healthcare provider, presented Singapore’s first Ms Goodwill Ambassador at the Stroke Support Station (S3) Charity Gala Dinner.

The Pageant was created to support S3 and to raise funds for the charity. Focusing on inculcating civic-mindedness and values through community involvement, this pageant aims to inspire others to raise public awareness for stroke while empowering women to become active citizens.

For the past month, more than 25 contestants had the opportunity to participate as volunteers at S3, interacting with stroke survivors, family members or caregivers while learning how the S3 wellness programmes help these stroke survivors to re-learn and enjoy active living for a better quality of life.
